Yaki Sugi: Day 07

We have finished the burn.  Seven days of burning, brushing, poly-coating, wiping and stacking. We’ve made it.  Thanks so much to Tyler for all of his hard work figuring out best practices for this process.  Thanks also to John Moore, Ilana Percher, Martha McQuade, Caitlin Dippo, Morgan Peterson, and Hakim Ali for joining us today.  We certainly couldn’t have wrapped up the process on Day 07 without you!

Martha and Caitlin get right to it.  Despite failing propane torches, they create a deep char and discover that charring all at once is much faster than charring incrementally in layers.

Hi! Looks like it is working out really well! The finished boards look beautiful! My husband and I are considering this technique on our garage exterior. We’re wondering what kind of wood you used and how much fuel you went through for how large of a space. And what you think of it now that you’ve had it on a while… any other tips for us?
